‘The Babadook’ and ‘The Water Diviner’ selected as Best Picture in the Australian Academy Awards
Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, Australia’s pre-eminent film and TV awards announced the 2014 winners name on Thursday. ‘The Babadook‘ directed by Jennifer Kent and Russel Crowe‘s ‘The Water Diviner‘ were selected as the Best Picture by the Academy.
Jennifer Kent also bagged the awards for ‘Best Direction‘ and ‘Best Screenplay‘ for her work in ‘The Babadook‘. David Uphill won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘Charlie’s Country‘. Sarah Snook for her performance in ‘Predestination’ won the Best actress honor.
Yilmaz Erdogan who played a crucial role in ‘The Water Diviner’ won the Best Supporting Actor award, while Susan Prior won Best Supporting actress award for ‘The Rover’.
The dual award winners came out as a surprise for film spectators all over Australia. “Whilst we had the extraordinary advent of seeing two feature films honoured with the AACTA Award for Best Film, this is not unprecedented, with AFI voting resulting in ties in the past, and international awards also having seen this result, including just last year when the Producers Guild of America (PGA) saw a tie in voting for Gravity and 12 Years a Slave. I take this result as a mark of considered voting by our Academy members, and I’m pleased that two outstanding films can share the honor of winning this award in a year of strong competition”, said Damien Trewhella, the CEO of the AACTA.
